Dylan Mooney

Artist and Activist for Our Islands, Our Home

“If I was creating without my culture and those stories behind them, my work wouldn't be sincere.” - Dylan Mooney

A proud Yuwi, Torres Strait, and South Sea Islander from Mackay in North Queensland, Dylan Mooney is a talented multimedia artist using his art to spark conversations about causes that hit close to home.

One issue that is particularly close to his heart is the preservation of the Torres Strait Islands and the seas of northern Australia. Dylan has strong ancestral ties to the islands, which are currently experiencing the worsening impacts of the climate crisis.

In 2022, we partnered with Our Islands, Our Home, an organisation dedicated to fighting for climate action for the Torres Strait Islands, and we showed our support in the sweetest way we know of: with ice cream! We churned up a limited-edition flavour called This is Our Whirled Dylan was an instrumental part of that project, creating the original artwork of the flavour packaging, you can read more about it here.

Beyond his climate activism work, Dylan is also using his art to reframe the conversation around queer love among people of colour, recentering marginalized voices that have been left out of the narrative.

When we asked Dylan how it feels to have his work, which is inherently so personal, out in the world, he said:

“At the beginning it was daunting... I was uncertain about what the response would be. Now I just embrace it, it's great having that support around me and knowing the work is important, not just to myself, but to others as well.”
