Good News Alert: PEP11 is not going ahead - a huge win for our planet!

There are some things that just don’t make sense, and drilling for fossil fuels off the most populated coast of Australia is one of them!

PEP11 stands for Petroleum Exploration Permit 11— a sneaky way of saying a licence to drill for oil & gas off of our coastline from Manly to Newcastle. Last year, we teamed up with Surfrider Australia in their fight to stop PEP11 and save our beaches, migrating whales and our planet from more fossil fuels.

Well… we have some good news! In December 2021, after a long delay in deciding whether the permit would go ahead, the Government announced it was officially cancelling PEP11!

A huge win for us all!

This is a huge victory for the activists, advocates, and everyday Australians who’ve pushed to stop PEP11. Groups like Surfrider Australia, Save our Coast and Living Ocean have been campaigning for years to stop PEP11, and most recently many of our Ben & Jerry’s fans joined in the fight too. This is a victory for everyone - communities who live and holiday on this coast, marine animals who call this stretch of coastline home and also, well…the whole planet, because burning more fossil fuels impacts us all.

What’s next?

Stopping PEP11 through community opposition is a big deal -  we absolutely made sure our leaders knew that this coastline was not to be drilled for fossil fuels. But it's not just PEP11 that's at risk. Right now, famous Aussie icons like the 12 Apostles, the Ningaloo Reef and King Island are all at risk from drilling for fossil fuels!

Our planet needs renewables now, not new fossil fuels. The good news is that we can stop this drilling from taking place, by electing people who also believe that gas has no business in Australia’s plan for recovery.

The most important climate election of our lifetime is coming this year and your voice and vote are critically important. Help save our coastline from fossil fuel drills by using your vote to elect leaders who will take action on climate this election!
